Time is Money: Invest it Wisely

As published in Scotsman Guide's Commercial Edition, April 2005.

Question:
It seems as though all of my tasks take longer than expected to complete. I seem to run out of time. There is no time to manage my family and business effectively. What tips do you have for managing your own time?

Answer:
Thousands of books have been written on this subject, but it still is one of the most-asked questions. To me, simple is the way to go. I keep a list.

This might sound uncomplicated, but I find it effective. First, organize all of your activities into a list. You should include family, play and personal time as well as work-related activities. Once you have compiled your list, arrange it in order of importance, with the least-important activity last. One tip for achieving the correct order is to take each item and put it through a couple of questions. First, ask yourself what is most important. Follow it with a comparison question, such as, “Is that more important that this other item? And if so, why?”
