How MBA first partnered with Habitat for Humanity in October 1998 under the direction of former MBA Chairman Don Lange.
In the past two years, MBA's efforts with Habitat for Humanity have focused on raising money and building homes for the Gulf Coast region.
During its Legal Issues and Regulatory Compliance Conference this past May in New Orleans, MBA members worked on the construction of a home in Slidell, La. It was MBA's 76th Habitat build since the launch of Under One Roof.
MBA and its members also have donated money to Habitat and have built homes during past conventions across the country. During the 2006 annual convention in Chicago, for example, they worked on the framing of a home that was shipped to Louisiana for final assembly through Habitat's Operation Home Delivery program.
In 2005, MBA also donated $500,000 for the program, which has aided Habitat's rebuilding efforts in the Gulf region.
Why Lange believed that working with a well-established organization such as Habitat was the best way to give back to the real estate community, says Angela Waugaman, MBA's senior media/public affairs specialist.
According to MBA's Web site, www.mortgagebankers.org, its partnership with Habitat also reflects the association's pledge to support the affordable-housing goals set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2004.
Impact Waugaman says the partnership has helped approximately 75 families -- and counting .
As part of its annual convention in Boston, MBA plans to raise funds and help build one of eight Habitat condominium units in a Boston-area mixed-use building on Oct. 13.
