FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
What is it?
Getting Personal is a regular column by a rotating group of authors. It appears on scotsmanguide.com and is featured prominently in our monthly e-newsletter.
What
should I write about?
Authors are encouraged to write about a personal experience dealing with the mortgage industry. First-person accounts are welcome.
Potential starting points:
-
What called you to the profession?
-
When did you understand this was the industry for you?
-
What was your best or worst experience, and why?
-
What was your biggest lesson or professional turning point?
-
How did you finally find success?
As per our guidelines, company references in article text are prohibited; these are OK in the short (50-word) bio that accompanies each piece.
How long should my story
be?
Approximately 500 words.
Should I submit a photo?
Yes. We require a high-resolution (300 dpi), full-color digital headshot photo, which will be printed with each article. TIFs and JPGs are OK, so long as they can reproduce crisply at 2" by 3" in print.
Can I
use the word "I"?
Yes. First-person writing is allowed and encouraged.
Can I mention
my company or proprietary products?
No. References to companies and proprietary products are not allowed. A short author bio (50 words or less), however, will run with every Getting Personal and may include these items.
What is the
deadline?
The deadline is approximately six weeks before publication date. For example, articles turned in before Jan. 10 will be considered for the March edition. Consult our editorial kit for more information.
After I submit my
story, when will I hear back?
Scotsman Guide will make every attempt to respond to all entries within a week of receipt. Our editorial committee will consider the piece for approval. We will let authors know the status of their article and when it might be published.
Can I make up
details?
Absolutely not. It is vital that all stories be true. A Scotsman Guide editor will work with authors whose stories are selected for publication to fact-check and edit as necessary.
Can I submit more than one
story?
Authors may submit as many Getting Personal entries as they desire, but only one entry will be published from each author every 12 months.
Is there a
cost?
No. The editorial content of Scotsman Guide is 100-percent separate from advertising. There is no cost and no advertising requirement.
