Networking: It's More Than Casual Conversation

Maintain your network
Just as important as establishing a firm network is maintaining it. The effort and energy invested in a network are directly proportionate to the strength of its results.

Networks don’t expand without regular maintenance. Reach out regularly to individuals you have incorporated into your network to keep the relationships relevant, vital and useful for both parties. Computer-based contact-management systems are a valuable tool for organizing contacts, tracking interactions with each person and scheduling future outreach efforts.

As you think about the best ways to stay in touch with your network, remember that time is valuable for everyone — so make the most of it. Express a genuine interest in all individuals and their businesses, and make conversations worthwhile to both parties. Bring some useful bit of information or service to the table. If you can demonstrate value, you will become a part of their network, too.
