Mortgage rates stay flat as the Fed sheds no light on December moves

Mortgage rates remained largely unchanged for the week on continuing uncertainty about the Federal Reserve’s intentions in December, Freddie Mac reported on Thursday.

Through Wednesday, the 30-year fixed rate averaged 3.97 percent, down one basis point from the prior week. A year ago, the rate averaged 3.99 percent. Other rates also fell marginally.

Sean Becketti,  Freddie’s chief economist, said that the biggest news of the week came with the release of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) minutes for the October meeting, but the statement was typically cryptic.

“The FOMC minutes were couched in careful Fed-speak, and early market reaction was mixed, with most analysts reading their own expectations into the minutes," Becketti said.
