Fannie Mae 2015 multifamily securities issuance hits $42B

Fannie Mae issued $9.8 billion of multifamily mortgage-backed securities (MBS) during the fourth quarter of 2015, the government-sponsored enterprise announced Friday. That brought its yearly total to $42 billion — a significant increase over 2014's total of $28.6 billion.

Most of the MBS were issued through Fannie's Delegated Underwriting and Servicing (DUS) program. More than $3 billion were resecuritized through Fannie's Guaranteed Multifamily Structures program.

"DUS lenders priced multifamily MBS nearly every single trading day in 2015," Josh Seiff, Fannie Mae's vice president of multifamily capital markets and trading, said in a release. "The lenders also retain credit risk on those loans."

Fannie Mae Capital Markets also sold $9.6 billion of multifamily mortgage securities in fourth-quarter 2015.
