Key rate declines in weekly survey

The 30-year fixed mortgage rate dipped slightly over the past week after steadily rising in April, Freddie Mac reported.

Through Wednesday, the rate averaged 4.55 percent, down three basis points from the prior week. A year ago, the rate averaged 4.02 percent. The 15-year fixed rate edged up a single basis point to 4.03 percent, but the rate for 5-year adjustable rate mortgages declined five basis points to 3.69 percent.

“While mortgage rates have increased by one-half of a percentage point so far this year, it has not impacted home purchase demand, which continues to grow this spring,” Freddie’s Chief Economist Sam Khater said. “The observed buyer resiliency in the face of higher rates reflects the healthy economy and strong consumer confidence, which are important drivers of home sales activity.”
