Congress extends flood program again

Congress on Thursday passed another temporary extension to the national flood program, assuring that the federal program that provides most Americans with flood insurance won't lapse for at least two more weeks.

The latest extension assures that the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) will be funded through Dec. 21, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) reported. Last week, Congress passed a one-week extension a few hours ahead of a deadline to reauthorize the program. This will be the 43rd extension of the NFIP since 1998, and the 41st short-term deal in 20 years, according to NAR.

“NAR is relieved to know that the NFIP was again extended before a lapse could occur,” said Shannon McGahn, NAR’s senior vice president of government affairs.

“However, flooding is a constant, unavoidable threat to Americans living in both coastal and inland communities across the country," she said. "As such, NAR urges the House and Senate to continue working towards responsible, long-term reauthorization that includes meaningful reforms, as the current process of continuous short term extensions is simply not sustainable.”
