MBA: Commercial lenders expect a strong year

Commercial lenders remained bullish about the year ahead, a new survey conducted by the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) suggests.

The trade group said 55 percent of surveyed originators believed their company’s lending volume would increase in 2019, and 38 percent expected volumes to rise by 5 percent or more above the 2018 level.

"The majority of top firms expect that strong appetites from both lenders and borrowers will drive commercial mortgage originations higher," said Jamie Woodwell, MBA vice president of research and economics.

Just 13 percent of the originators, however, believed that volumes would increase by 5 percent across the entire market. Originators were slightly less optimistic than at the beginning of 2018, given the potential negatives of higher interest rates, an uptick in new construction and concerns about the broader economy, Woodwell said.

‘Even so, only two in five expect commercial and multifamily mortgage originations to slow this year, and only one-in-twenty expect their own firm's loan volume to decline," Woodwell said.
