How Vos learned of the Anchor Center for Blind Children through Charlie Riley, a client whose son participated in its program.

With the help of her husband, Matt, and Riley, Vos planned the fund-raising gala. The event featured live and silent auctions, dance performances and testimonials from parents who have children in the program.

According to its Web site, the center was founded in 1982 and serves more than 300 families per year. The center helps blind and visually impaired children from 6 months to 5 years old learn to function in the school systems and in life. Its programs are designed to enhance sensory development and promote socialization and self-help activities.

Through classes, one-on-one sessions and support groups, the center also teaches parents how to encourage and help their visually impaired children.

Why After moving to Denver in April 2006, Vos looked for a Denver charity in which she could make the biggest impact.

She says that the Anchor Center was “a perfect match” because she had previously worked with disabled children.

“I have a heart for those in need and charities that do not receive [the amount of] funding as some of the larger nonprofits,” Vos says.

Impact The black-tie gala raised more than $20,000 for the Anchor Center. More than 125 people attended.

The center is moving to a new facility this fall because it has outgrown its current home, Vos says. Funds raised at the gala have gone toward buying new equipment for the new location, she says.
