Site Santa Fe

How Each fall since 2003, about 60 Thornburg Mortgage employees — including Goldstone and CEO Garrett Thornburg — have helped with construction at a Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity building site.

The employees work side-by-side with full-time Habitat volunteers for three days. They mix cement, install insulation, tile bathrooms and more.

In addition, the company has donated as much as $20,000 to the organization each year.

Why Thornburg felt that volunteering with and contributing to Santa Fe’s Habitat chapter was an appropriate fit for its corporate-philanthropy efforts, says David Miller, Thornburg’s corporate-communications director. The experience lets employees see another side of the lending business, he says.

“Providing assistance with the construction of a home for a family who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford a home demonstrates a different kind of involvement [in the lending industry],” Goldstone says.

Impact Miller says Thornburg employees often meet with owners of their respective project houses. Homeowners often share their stories and talk about the difference the home makes in their lives, he says.

In addition, Miller says, the homeowners and their family members often work with the Thornburg employees and other volunteers on the building project.

The company plans to volunteer again this fall, he says.
