Residential Department: From the Editor: January 2011

From the Editor

Many people mark a new year by making changes to better themselves, personally and professionally. It's typically seen as a time of renewal and a time to try new things.

With this month's Scotsman Guide, we're doing just that. In this issue, you'll notice that we've made a few changes with the new year.

First, if you're wondering what's happening at, our award-winning website, you can find out in our new table of contents on Page 8 in our print and digital edition. There, you'll learn about online-only content and promotions, as well as find out how to keep up with us on Facebook and Twitter.

In addition, as mortgage brokers and originators, you know that in 2011, you will continue to face a changing and challenging legislative and regulatory environment. To help you sort through the changes, we are introducing a new column, titled The FinePrint. Each month, Churchill Mortgage's Richard Smith, who has written about various regulatory topics in previous issues, will discuss the regulatory and legislative issues affecting the industry. In his first installment, Smith talks about the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and what it will mean for the mortgage industry.

You'll find another new feature on the last page of the magazine, as well. Each month in BackSpace, Scotsman Guide's editorial staff will examine trends and issues facing the industry. This month, associate editor Darrick Meneken takes an in-depth look at mortgage-fraud trends.

Finally, it's time to enter your information for Scotsman Guide's second annual Top Originators list. Set for publication in our April issue, we again expect this to be the most comprehensive, verified ranking of the nation's top mortgage brokers, bankers, loan originators, etc. For this year's list, we have expanded the data we're requesting to account for the changing market and to better reflect different niches and the distressed-property market.

We had a great response last year and expect even more submissions this year. We're accepting entries from Jan. 3 to Jan. 31, so don't delay. You can read entry guidelines and can enter your 2010 data at

We wish you the best of luck with your Top Originators entry and with all your endeavors this year.
