Residential Department: From the Editor: April 2015

From the Editor

April is bigger and better than ever

Two major projects — the Top Originators 2014 rankings and the redesign of our residential loan matrixes — came to fruition this month, making this one of the biggest and best issues ever. Both endeavors took months of hard work and literally hundreds — if not thousands — of hours to complete.

The Top Originators project began late last year as we evaluated which loan programs and breakdowns to highlight. The addition of home equity lines of credit to this year’s rankings required redesigning our online submission form, so we took the time to streamline the form and make it more user-friendly.

Top Originators 2014

Once data began pouring in this past January, the arduous tasks of verifying data, collating numbers, and building the 10 separate rankings began in earnest. Turn to Page 34 for more details about the process, and then turn to Page 36 to see who made the Top Dollar Volume rankings. To read the secret for reaching the top spot, turn to Page 18 to read our profile on Mark Cohen of Cohen Financial, who hit No. 1 for the third straight year. Then, for some in-depth analysis of all the Top Originators data, turn to BackSpace on Page 154.

The other project, our massive redesign of the residential loan matrixes, was a year-long process. Our matrix manager, Garrett Geiger, spent countless hours researching residential loan programs to ensure our matrixes provide the broadest spectrum of offerings possible. We increased our wholesale offerings by adding data points for non-Qualified Mortgages, fix-and-flips, and business-purpose residential loans. We also reworked our subprime matrixes from scratch after scouring the country for every subprime program we could find. Check out the new matrixes starting on Page 65. In addition, our redesigned matrix content is also available online powered by brand new search engines at ScotsmanGuide.com.

Of course, this issue has more than just Top Originators rankings and new loan matrixes. This month, we focus on green practices in the mortgage industry. For our Q&A on Page 20, we interviewed Ruth Ann Norton, president and CEO of the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative. You also can find some office recycling tips from Chip Poli of Poli Mortgage Group on Page 76. Do you think the mortgage industry is ready for e-signatures, which could drastically reduce paper waste? Read an in-depth article by Russ Gould of Kofax on Page 57.

As usual, we also present articles written by mortgage professionals on a variety of industry topics. Stuart Blend of HomeBridge Funding wants to show you how to build an advantage by becoming an expert on renovation loans (Page 73). Beyond the Arc’s Steven J. Ramirez discusses how customer segmentation and predictive analytics can help you attract more customers (Page 105). And Alain Valles of Direct Financing Corp. has the answers to your questions about the new reverse mortgage rules (Page 118).

These articles and more, along with the most comprehensive and rigorously verified rankings of the top mortgage originators in the country and our new and completely revamped loan matrixes, make this issue one of the largest in recent years. It also is sure to be one of the most-read issues of 2015.

Create. Educate. Illuminate.
