Democratic lawmakers question whether a nonprofit payment platform led by the FHFA director is operating outside of exempt activities
Senators Ron Wyden and Elizabeth Warren press FHFA head Bill Pulte about potential tax fraud linked to Trump legal defense.

Two Democratic ranking members of the U.S. Senate are demanding Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte hand over documents in connection with allegations he formed a fake nonprofit to funnel cash to President Donald Trump’s broad legal defenses.

In a pair of letters sent Friday to Pulte and the president of his nonprofit, Team Pulte Inc., senators Ron Wyden of Oregon and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts raised concerns about the nonprofit’s 2023 tax filings.

Specifically, the senators cited tax documents and reporting by Mother Jones suggesting Trump’s housing chief used his nonprofit microdonation platform to pay One World Love LLC, which according to those sources appears to be a corporate entity established by Binnall Law Group, a firm with close links to Trump’s and administration allies’ legal defenses between 2021 and 2024.

Wyden and Warren want answers regarding the exact purpose of a $65,000 grant Team Pulte made to One World in November 2024, which the tax filing states was for “assitance [sic] to underserved people.”

A partner of Binnall Law opened One World Love LLC in August 2021 and dissolved it in December 2023, according to public records. The letter indicates that the only “grant” made to One World — an important technicality and feature of the Team Pulte payment platform’s nonprofit status — was Team Pulte’s in 2023.

Team Pulte’s tax records describe One World as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. But the employer identification number associated with One World does not match any registered nonprofit, according to Mother Jones’ reporting.

Besides a response to the $65,000 question, Wyden and Warren are seeking all internal Team Pulte documents and correspondence related to One World Love and Binnall Law Group. Additionally, the senators posed a series of questions about “apparently inaccurate information” in Team Pulte’s tax filings.

Pulte was tapped by Trump in March 2025 to be head of the FHFA, which regulates government-sponsored enterprises Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Soon after taking over the federal housing agency, Pulte appointed himself chair of Fannie’s and Freddie’s boards of directors, ousting and replacing many existing members in the process.

Widespread media reports demonstrate Pulte has a close relationship with the president, and Pulte has leaned heavily into key Trump administration initiatives like eradicating diversity, equity and inclusion programs and pursuing legal retribution for perceived foes of the administration.

Pulte and the FHFA are currently being investigated by the Government Accountability Office “to determine whether the agency and its employees misused federal authority and resources” in a series of formal allegations of mortgage fraud he disclosed against New York Attorney General Letitia James; Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif.; Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook; and Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif.

The FHFA did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication. The phone number listed for Team Pulte in IRS filings is not in service.
