Trillions of dollars’ worth of U.S. homes are at risk from damage caused by fire, flooding or wind, according to a recent study by Zillow.

Using climate risk data supplied by First Street, the Seattle-based real estate company found that the value of U.S. homes at risk for major wind damage totals at least $17 trillion. Homes worth $9.1 trillion face fire threats, while floods could damage homes valued at $7 trillion.

Riverside, Calif., has the highest percentage of homes at risk for fire damage, according to the Zillow study. Homes in New Orleans face the highest risk for flood damage, while Miami has the largest fraction of homes at risk for wind damage.

The analysis also broke down climate risk by major metropolitan areas. The Los Angeles metro area has the highest total value of homes at risk of major fires at $831 billion. The New York City metro area actually topped two lists, with $3 billion worth of homes vulnerable to extreme wind damage and $593 billion worth of homes facing major flood risks.
