Florida had the largest net gain last year of people moving in from other U.S. states or internationally.

The Sunshine State had a gain of 475,339 people from domestic and international migration, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) reported based on U.S. Census data. Texas wasn’t far behind at 404,836, NAR reported.

Notably, New York and California both reversed recent net migration losses. California saw a net increase of 120,000, the fourth most after Florida, California and North Carolina. New York had a net migration gain of 86,244.

All U.S. states had gain in the total number of people moving in last year either from another state or country, driven by a big increase in international migration into U.S. states.

International migration into the U.S. had a net gain of 2.8 million people in 2024, accounting for 84% of the nation’s total population growth of 3.3 million in 2024.

International migration has increased from 1.7 million in 2022 and 2.3 million in 2023.

California remains the most populous state at 39.4 million, followed by Texas at 31.3 million and Florida at 23.4 million, according to Census data.
