The U.S. Department of Justice could open an antitrust investigation into U.S. home builders in the coming weeks, Bloomberg reported Friday. People familiar with the administration’s discussions cited the White House’s focus on tackling the country’s housing affordability crisis, according to Bloomberg.
The DOJ probe could focus on an industry trade group called Leading Builders of America, and how alleged information sharing may be used to restrict housing supply or coordinate pricing, the people said. Members of the group include Lennar Corp. and DR Horton Inc.
Bloomberg did not identify the sources, who had asked not to be identified discussing non-public information.
The administration’s alleged focus on investigating home builders did not appear to sit well with Buddy Hughes, chairman of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). In an emailed statement to Scotsman Guide, he said, “The key to making homes more affordable is to increase housing supply. That will take government working with home builders not against them.”
Hughes stated there are more than 77,000 home building firms across the country, and the vast majority are small businesses that average less than 10 homes built per year.

“The housing market is struggling due to larger economic pressures on consumers. As a result, home builders are lowering prices,” Hughes commented. NAHB’s latest builder survey revealed that 40% of its members reported cutting prices in January and 65% used sales incentives, he said.
“Moreover, new homes are cheaper than existing homes,” Hughes added. “According to the latest government and industry data, the new-home median price was $392,000 in October 2025, compared to $420,000 for the typical existing single-family home.”
Representatives for Leading Builders of America did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
This is not the first time the administration has trained its focus on home builders. In October, President Donald Trump posted on social media, comparing “Big Homebuilders of our Nation” to OPEC countries colluding to keep oil prices inflated.
“It wasn’t right for them to do that but, in a different form, is being done again,” Trump stated, adding that home builders are “very important to the SUCCESS of our Country, but now, they can get Financing, and they have to start building Homes.”
