Lawsuit aims to block Fair Housing Initiatives Program funds from being directed away from local nonprofits

A lawsuit filed against the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) seeks to stop the agency’s redirection of its Fair Housing Initiatives Program (FHIP) funds in a way that housing advocates say would “cause irreparable harm.”
Housing groups say the change to FHIP, a 39-year-old federal grant program that has been the primary source of funding for local fair housing enforcement and education, “will destroy many of the over 100 local, nonprofit fair housing organizations around the country that enforce the Fair Housing Act.”
The lawsuit, filed by the Massachusetts Fair Housing Center and the National Fair Housing Alliance (NFHA), seeks a temporary restraining order as well as declaratory and injunctive relief.
