Rohit Chopra is out as the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Chopra was fired by President Donald Trump via email, The Associated Press reported Saturday morning.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., a supporter of Chopra, also confirmed the firing in a statement on Saturday.

She said the CFPB under Chopra’s leadership is “holding Wall Street accountable for cheating hard-working families and preventing the de-banking of Americans across the county.”

Warren, who was a driving force in the creation of the agency, said Trump “campaigned on capping credit card interest rates at 10% and lowering costs for Americans.”

“He needs a strong CFPB and a strong CFPB director to do that,” she said in the statement.

The firing comes as Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is making another attempt to kill the agency. The Texas Republican has introduced the Defund the CFPB Act, which would eliminate all funding for the bureau.

Cruz introduced bills to defund the bureau in 2015 and again in 2023. But those attempts failed. Now, with majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, Republican lawmakers again are trying to defund the bureau again.
