Tech firms may spend $700 billion on data centers this year, but a majority of U.S. residents are wary of the technology race and its economic benefits

Even as data center development becomes an important driver of the U.S. economy, more than half of the nation’s population opposes building such projects in their area, according to recent reports.
This year, it is estimated that companies will spend nearly $51 billion to construct data centers, surpassing public spending on the nation’s transportation infrastructure for the first time, according to MarketWatch.
But that is only the beginning. Total capital investments in data centers are expected to reach $700 billion this year, and possibly $820 billion next year, according to Moody’s Investors Service.
