Massachusetts ranked as the top state in 2024 for environmentally friendly commercial building, the U.S. Green Building Council announced this week.

The Bay State saw 132 projects totaling 34.8 million square feet, the Council said. Massachusetts topped the list based on achieving 4.95 LEED-certified square footage per capita, the highest among states. Some of the notable projects receiving certification were at Gillette Stadium, One Boston Wharf and 300 3rd Avenue Waltham, projects that involved more than 1.6 million square feet.

After Massachusetts, the top five LEED-building states last year were Illinois (4.02 square feet), New York (3.44 square feet per capita), Washington state (3.03 square feet) and Maryland (2.77 square feet).

By LEED-certified square footage, California and Texas were the top states. California had 437 certified projects totaling 101.9 million square feet, and Texas had 205 projects at 75.1 million square feet, the Council reported.

In total, the nation’s top 10 states certified 1,437 LEED projects with more than 414 million gross square feet.

While not a state, the District of Columbia continued to lead the nation in green building, seeing more than 33 square feet of certified space per resident across 111 green building projects, the Council reported.
