Bureau calls mortgage supervision its ‘highest priority’ as it shifts focus away from nonbanks

A new plan to restructure the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) was unveiled in a federal appeals court filing on Wednesday, proposing the bureau slash its staff from the 1,723 employees it had in 2025 to just 556.
This would represent a 67.7% reduction in force for the bureau, instead of the nearly 90% reduction that had been desired by Acting Director Russell Vought. The bureau has already been reduced to 1,174 employees.
“This latest attempt to eliminate essential staff at the CFPB would reduce the bureau to an empty shell, unable to fulfill the functions the CFPB is statutorily required to engage in,” stated Chi Chi Wu, director of consumer reporting and data advocacy at the National Consumer Law Center, in a press r...
