How to become a loan originator without a banking background

Experience in finance is not a prerequisite — the skills that matter most are often built in entirely different careers

One misconception about loan originators is that the role belongs to people who came up through banking. But the reality tells a different story. The traits that define a successful originator have far less to do with balance sheets and credit analysis than with the ability to listen, communicate clearly and guide someone through one of the most consequential decisions of their financial life.
The licensing process itself confirms this. The Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS) does not require a college degree, a background in financial services or prior experience in lending.
